Certificate III in Agriculture

Institution: CB Alexander Agricultural College, "Tocal"

Course Description: A practical hands-on course using the College's large commercial farms and local Hunter Valley properties, covers all aspects of agriculture including beef cattle, horses, sheep, machinery, crops and dairying.

Major Studies: Livestock husbandry; Pastures; Cropping; Practical Skills.

Entry Requirements: Year 10 or equivalent.

Course Duration: 36 weeks.

Mode of Study: Full-time.

Accreditation: VETAB (NSW).

Articulation: Students with previous training or experience are given recognition and advanced standing. Articulation arrangements with other institutions are in place.

Career Outcomes: Graduates are keenly sought after by employers as farmhands and stationhands. Careers also available with Government departments and agribusiness.

Course Description: Trains people for careers in the horse industry.

Major Studies: Horse handling; Breeding & Nutrition; Pastures; Farm Machinery; Horse Breaking; Care of brood mares and foals; Practical Skills.

Entry Requirements: Year 10 or equivalent.

Course Duration: 30-34 weeks.

Mode of Study: Full-time.

Accreditation: VETAB (NSW)

Articulation: Students with previous training or experience are given recognition and advanced standing. Articulation arrangements with other institutions are being negotiated.

Career Outcomes: Graduates will be employed on horse properties in a range of positions including grooms, station hands, vets assistants and horse trainers.

Certificate I, II & III in Fishing Operations

Institution: Australian Maritime College

Course Description: Based around knowledge requirements for the master of a fishing vessel (24 metres) operating within Australia's 200 mile fishing zone.

Major Studies: Safety Training; Industry Overview; Watchkeeping; Seamanship; Engineering; Fishing Technology; Seafood Handling; Gear Technology.

Entry Requirements: Year 10. Bridging courses or preliminary work may be prescribed. For career as a Skipper - statutory health and eyesight requirements apply.

Course Duration: One year - 3 phases of study apply.

Mode of Study: Full-time, however, there are distinct exit points allowing trainees to gain sea-time requirements.

Registration: Tasmanian Training Authority (TASTA)

Accreditation: ACTARC.

Career Outcomes: Master of fishing vessel (24 metres) includes parts of Certificates for Skipper 3 and Marine Engine Driver 3.

Course Fees: Cert. I - $175, Cert. II - $280, Cert. III $300.

Other: Statutory health & fitness requirements apply as set down by Australian Regulatory Authorities.
