Audio Engineering Program (Certificate IV)

Course Description: This course trains students in studio techniques and in the operation of recording studio equipment.

Major Studies: Analogue Tape Machines; Console Signal Flow; Hard Disk Recording; MIDI; Digital Tape Machines; Microphones; Electronics; Live Sound.

Entry Requirements: Year 11 or mature age.

Course Duration: Full-time - 9 months. Part-time - 18 months.

Mode of Study: Full-time intakes - March, June, September. Part-time intakes - February, August.

Accreditation: State Training Board of Victoria, VETAB (NSW), Austudy approved.

Career Outcomes: Recording, film sound, live sound PA installation, radio & broadcast, music for web sites & CD duplication are just some of the areas in which SAE graduates now work.

Advanced Diploma of Photography (Photojournalism, Commercial / Art)

Course Description: The purpose of this course is to provide the educational and training environment required to enable students wishing to pursue a career in the photography industry to achieve their goal. Given the diverse nature of the industry, the course has been developed over the past 25 years to ensure students develop competencies and excellence in a wide range of key areas. The course aims:

* to enable students to effectively pursue a career in the photographic industry either as self employed professionals, practical artists or paid employees.

* to progressively develop students visual communication skills and techniques to ensure a high level of competency is achieved.

* to provide a pathway to higher education.

Course Duration: 3 years full-time, 4 years part-time.

Mode of Study: Full-time-day; part-time- day or evening. Commencement dates: Full-time- 26 February 2001; Part-time - a range of start dates throughout the year. Further details available from the College.

Accreditation: State Training Board of Victoria, National Register, Austudy approved. Industry peak body - Australian Institute of Professional Photography (AIPP).

Articulation: Graduates are eligible to apply to RMIT for a one year degree conversion to  Bachelor of Arts in Photography or Media Arts.

Career Outcomes: A range of exciting career options are available to graduates of this course - from advertising photography to corporate / industrial photography; from portraiture to fashion photography; from newspaper or editorial photography to publication work; from photographic artist to gallery/curatorial administration. Further opportunities exist in the expanding digital imaging sector of the industry. Further study in the visual arts is also an option.

3.    Video Production

Certificate IV in Digital Video Production

Institution: Open Channel Co-operative Ltd

Course Description: The Certificate IV in Digital Video Production is an intensive course focusing on every aspect of video production with an emphasis on digital technology.

The  aims of the course are:

  • to provide an accredited training program for people wishing to pursue a career in the film and television industry and/or further education and training;
  • to provide participants with the skills and knowledge to independently undertake all aspects of single camera, video, pre-production, production and off-line editing;
  • to develop professional work practices through project based learning.

Major Studies: The emphasis of the course is on gaining practical skills.  Hands-on filmmaking begins on day two of this course.  Specialist industry professionals teach all units including scriptwriting, directing, camera operation, lighting, audio, editing and production management.  At the conclusion of the course students present their work at a public screening event.   Classes are structured around the following group projects:

Documentary Project
Students explore the genre of documentary by working in production teams to produce, shoot and edit a short documentary.

Drama Project:
The drama project builds students' understanding of narrative filmmaking and introduces the process of directing actors.  Students work in groups to produce a short drama from scripts developed in class.

Individual Project:
Students work on a 1:1 basis with a professional scriptwriter to develop their major project and have the opportunity to consolidate their practical skills by working in crew roles on the other students' projects.

Entry Requirements: No pre-requisites. Open to all Australian residents 18 years and over.

Course Duration: Part-time over 22 weeks beginning 4 April 2001 or full-time over 18 weeks beginning 13 August 2001.

Mode of Study: Part-time and Full-time, Day.

Accreditation: State Training Board of Victoria.

Career Outcomes: Many graduates have achieved entry to further tertiary film and media courses at the Victorian College of the Arts, RMIT and the Australia Film, Television and Radio School.  Others have directly entered employment within the film, video and digital media industries.

Course Fees: The Certificate IV in Digital Video Production is a full fee paying course. Course fees for 2001 will be $4,500. Students may be eligible for Austudy / Abstudy. (Updated December 2000)
